Diving head-first into the Art World
It's official, I have scheduled my first ever Art show! Not only that, I have scheduled my next 5! This is something that I've always wanted to do and never really got around to doing it. I am starting with a huge run, printing and framing 26 different images which I may in the future offer for sale through the website as well. Most all of the images are from the main website, or at least have been at one time or another. I'm printing mostly 20x30's and some 16x20's
UPDATED, I might be wrong..."Accused! - Jon Engle"
As you'll see in the comment below, I just might have been a little too hasty in pointing this story out to everyone. My normal skeptic mind has failed me on this one and I apologize. I have left my original post below unedited so everyone can see my folly. You can read my reason for posting this update here:
Long-Term Value of Digital | A photographers concern
Famous artists of the past produced physical, tangible works that could be bought, sold, traded, and displayed. These works were produced by hand and have great value. Looking at an 11x8 Ansel Adam's original print valued at $15,000 one can't help but think...is this digital world devaluing art?

Thoughts on Annie Leibovitz's book "At Work"
So reading the book raised a question...do I need to be looking at famous photographers' work? Annie references her influences like I should know who they are, or what she's talking about. Reading this book is like having a conversation at a museum with one of those horn-rimmed glass wearing guys dressed in all black that speaks with a fake british accent.
NYC Man Arrested for Photographing a Train
Frequently I would see a scene to photograph, and normally did (see photo above, and yes...I know I've posted it before). The arguments with the Transit Police were very often frightening. After the first altercation I started carrying copies of the MTA rules on photography to present to the untrained officers. They didn't like this, and it normally made the arguments more heated, but it kept me from being arrested/fined.
Magnolia Photo Session
Here's some of the shots from my recent session with the wonderful Nashville country band Magnolia. We did the shoot over at the Nashville Zoo which turned out to be an AMAZING location as well as a rock beach off of Percy Priest.
Brian Brushwood Photo Shoot
On Tuesday I had the great opportunity to meet and photograph magician Brian Brushwood host of Scam School on Revision3. Brian's a really great guy and we had a blast making these photos. We were short on time, so we just set up right in his hotel room in Nashville.
Big Skinny Wallet | The best wallet ever!
My fiance bought this wallet for me for Christmas this past year and it's amazing. The idea of it is that it can hold all the crap from my old "costanza" wallet while still maintaining a slim profile. I was skeptical at first, but it was amazing when I got it, and after using it for 2 months now, I can say with all certainty that it's the best wallet I've ever owned.
New Marketing | How the bad economy is good for business
This downtime is exactly the time we need to revamp and rethink, streamline and slim-down. In the end, I imagine that the poor economy may end up being the best thing to ever happen to my career. If you orchestrate it right, that statement could be true for you too.
Obama makes the cover of Spider-man
I'd be remiss if I didn't acknowledge comic book characters like Peter Parker and Jimmy Olsen for making it seem cool and adventurous to be a photographer. That being said, who's your favorite fictional photographer? There have been plenty portrayed in books, tv, and film, pipe up in the comments below and let us know who you like!
Have you ever felt discriminated against? | A request for stories
If you have a story or stories about being or feeling different from everyone else and what that was/is like, please share it. Feel free to be as descriptive and long-winded as you wish to be...I'm putting no limits on this.
I am engaged!!!! | Photos and a sappy story
I popped the question back in November, so this announcement is slightly belated therefore this is slightly old news to a lot of you by now. Just on Saturday, I finally got a chance to take some photos of myself and my bride-to-be! I'll start with the photos, and then tell our story...that way those of you that don't care can skip out before the sappiness!
How do you approach and photograph a stranger? | 6 tips for "Treasure Hunting"
Almost all photographers do it. There's something fun and magical about the possibilities when going to a new place, or even better yet, an old familiar place, with a camera to record what you find and the people you meet. I do this very often, and I thought I'd use this space to give a couple of pointers about how to approach a stranger that you want to photograph.
